Headlines are King

It’s been interesting to watch the upcoming Manitoba Provincial election from afar. Given how close I was to the election, having a different (completely unattached) perspective has made me question why it is that I ever wanted to get into politics in the first place. I said in many interviews that I thought we were further ahead than we are. I now realize that, not only are we not ready for humans to be politicians, we’re actually further back than we were at the turn of the century.

Why? The media and their race for headlines, coupled with the people’s urgency of opinion. Case in point: Justin Trudeau’s “the budget will balance itself,” comment. I see so many people mocking our Prime Minister for this line. That’s because the media and the headline chasers framed the conversation as such.

Here’s the actual interview where Justin made his budget comment:

Now, I’m fully aware most of you won’t actually watch the entire interview, and that’s my point. Our fearless leader clearly says, if we make the following investments we will then prop up the economy enough for the budget to balance itself because of this list of known factors in economics. So, if you take the one-line sound byte and throw it out there, obviously people are going to think Mr Trudeau has no economic plan. But, if you do your research you’ll see there is a clear plan in place.

Here’s more examples of the ridiculous claims of those on the interweb:

Rana Bokhari grew up in India, and only came to Canada a few years ago. I’m not sure where this came from, but it’s untrue. It’s easy to do the research and discover she grew up in Anola, MB. I’m going to go out on the limb and say some racially frustrated neanderthal posted this, and his friends just drank the Kool-Aid.

Greg Selinger isn’t a liar. Do a simple Google search. There is an endless amount of information available to show full interviews where he lies his face off. Full-day Kindergarten is making people not vote for the Liberals because children can’t handle a full-day. Little do these people know that Manitoba has had a pilot program for a full-day K program for years, and if you want to know how the program will be framed, you can just talk to those involved. Kindergarten is also optional in Manitoba, so no one is forcing you do anything you don’t want to do.

These are just a few pieces of misinformation out there. Please, people, if you see something that intrigues you, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Don’t take anything at face value unless you’ve seen the entire clip, read through the research, and done your due diligence. Ultimately, your one post with the wrong info can spread, and you could become part of the problem in a big way.

Now, if you want to know how Justin Trudeau is doing, take a look at this site:

If you’re reading this, it’s because you’re interested in the topic, so if you have these misconceptions, but still won’t watch the video, or read through the links, then please, for the love of fuck (yes, I still swear) get off the internet. You’re doing more harm then good.
